Focusing on Blepharoplasty By Carmel Cosmetic and Plastic Surgeons on October 24, 2019

Eyelid lift, or blepharoplasty, is a surgical procedure that improves the appearance of the eyelids.  Surgery can be performed on the upper lids, lower lids, or both. Upper and lower eyelid surgery can be performed cosmetically to rejuvenate your eyes and give you a more youthful appearance.  Upper blepharoplasty can also sometimes be performed to improve a functional deficit such as visual field impairment.

Droopy eyelids are a major reason why some people consider eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty).  As we age, the eyelid skin stretches, muscles weaken, and fat pockets become more prominent giving many a tired looking appearance. Excess upper or lower eyelid skin (dermatochalasis) or prominent fat pockets may also simply run in your family.  Cosmetically, whether due to aging or genetics, these conditions may detract from the overall attractiveness of your eyes and face and cause you to appear older and more fatigued.

Cosmetic blepharoplasty can remove excess skin, muscle, and sometimes fat from the upper or lower eyelids. In some cases, you might need only skin removed but not muscle — or you might need the procedure done on both upper and lower eyelids. Following your cosmetic blepharoplasty surgery, you will note an improved, more youthful, and alert appearance.  See our photo gallery.

A functional blepharoplasty (in contrast to a cosmetic blepharoplasty) is eyelid surgery performed for medical reasons. In most cases, a functional eye lift is performed to remove loose skin from the upper eyelid if it droops low enough to impair your vision for driving or other visual tasks. Other functional problems include difficulty wearing contact lenses or irritation from excess folds of eyelid skin rubbing together.

Whether you want to improve your appearance or are experiencing functional problems with your eyelids such as impaired vision, eyelid surgery can help.
