Breast Lift (Mastopexy)
A woman's breasts can droop over time as a result of pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight changes, and the aging process.
At Carmel Cosmetic & Plastic Surgeons, we can lift and reshape breasts that have lost their firm, uplifted contours.

How Can a Breast Lift
Transform Your Appearance?
Perkier Breasts
As part of the natural aging process, pregnancy, or weight fluctuations, the quality and elasticity of your skin diminishes and breast volume decreases. This results in ptosis or sagging of the breasts. With breast lift surgery, we can reshape the breasts and adjust the nipple-areola complex to restore the appearance of youthful, perky breasts.
A More Youthful Breast Shape
When the breasts begin to droop, they lose their shape, which can make it difficult to find bras, bathing suits, and other clothing that fits comfortably. With breast lift surgery, we can reshape the breasts and make it easier for you to find well-fitting clothes. If the loss of breast tissue and volume is also a problem, we can augment the breasts with breast implants.
Improved Symmetry
For many women, the breasts and nipples sag at different rates, resulting in an asymmetrical appearance. During breast lift surgery, we will remove precise amounts of excess skin, lift the breasts, and adjust the nipple-areola complex to produce a more symmetrical, balanced look.

What
Is a Mastopexy?
Mastopexy is the official medical term for the breast lift procedure. A breast lift improves breast shape by shifting the underlying tissue upwards. Our surgeons can also move the position of the nipple areloar complex and reduce the size of the areola during the procedure.
Who Is a Good Candidate
for a Breast Lift?
Most women who have noticed that their breasts are beginning to sag or that their nipples are pointing downward should qualify for a breast lift. We typically recommend breast lift surgery to women who have:
Been Pregnant
The effects of pregnancy and breastfeeding can result in diminished skin quality. In addition, the breasts often lose volume after pregnancy, further contributing to the appearance of drooping breasts.
Experienced Changes in Weight
Weight gain and loss affects the skin all over the body, including the breasts. Unfortunately, significant weight fluctuations can increase the risk of breast ptosis and enlarged areolas.
Naturally Large Breasts
Women with naturally large breasts are more likely to notice some sagging of the breasts by the time they reach their 40s. With time, the heavy weight of the breasts can stretch the skin and result in ptosis.
Noticed the Signs of Aging
Eventually, signs of aging affect all of us. Even women with more moderately sized breasts will notice increased droopiness as the decades pass. As we age, the skin on the breasts loses elasticity and becomes thinner.
Breast Lift Techniques:
What Are My Options?
The surgical procedure is performed in Indianapolis with the patient under general anesthesia. We can perform breast lift surgery through a variety of incision patterns and techniques. Which technique is most appropriate for you will depend on your breast size and shape, the size and position of the areola, the degree of sagging present, and the quality and elasticity of your skin.
Typically, more minor to moderate cases of drooping breasts can be lifted through smaller, periareolar incisions, such as the donut or crescent techniques. However, if necessary, additional incisions may be made down the center of the lower breast mound and along the lower breast crease, as in the lollipop and anchor techniques. Our surgeons will recommend the incision that will provide you with the most attractive, long lasting results.

Combining Procedures
for the Best Results
Breast Augmentation
Many women have lost breast tissue due to pregnancy or the aging process. Others may simply wish to increase the size of the breasts for a more filled out silhouette. During the breast augmentation procedure, we can place breast implants to add fullness and volume to the breasts, particularly in the upper area. By combining the lift procedure with breast implants, we can fill out and reshape the breasts during one surgical appointment.
Breast Reduction
There are some case in which women have overly large breasts that have begun to sag as a result of age or weight gain. For these patients, it may be more appropriate to perform a breast reduction procedure. This procedure utilizes the same incisions as a breast lift, but involves the removal of tissue and excess skin. If you wish to reduce the size of your breasts, we invite you to contact our practice in Carmel to learn more about breast reduction.

Breast Lift
Recovery and Side Effects
Following breast lift surgery at our Indianapolis practice, patients can expect:
- To experience swelling and discomfort at the incision sites
- To control discomfort with medication
- To wear a support bra
- To take at least five to 10 days off work, as long as there is no heavy lifting
As you heal, swelling will decrease and incision lines will fade.
Breast Lift
Results
The final results of a breast lift are immediately apparent. As you recover from the surgery, your results should become more refined over time. However, it is important to keep in mind that your breasts will continue to change due to aging and gravity. The best way to prolong your lift is by maintaining your weight and a healthy life style.
