Breast Lift (Mastopexy)
A woman's breasts can droop over time due to pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight changes, and the natural aging process.
A mastopexy can lift and reshape breasts that have lost their firm, uplifted contours.
Dr. Elizabeth A. Grasee and Dr. Debra C. Bergman can improve your self-image through a breast lift at our practice serving Indianapolis, IN.
What Is a Mastopexy? The Medical Term for Breast Lift
A mastopexy is the official medical term for the breast lift procedure, and you may hear the words used interchangeably. A mastopexy improves breast shape by shifting the underlying tissue upwards to create a youthful-looking bustline. Our plastic surgeons can also move the position of the nipple-areolar complex and reduce the areola size during this cosmetic surgery.
How Can a Breast Lift
Transform Your Appearance?
As part of the natural aging process, pregnancy, or weight fluctuations, the quality and elasticity of your skin diminishes and breast volume decreases. This results in ptosis, or sagging of the breasts. With breast lift surgery, we can reshape the breasts and resize the nipple-areola complex to restore the appearance of youthful, perky breasts.
A More Youthful Breast Shape
When the breasts begin to droop, they lose their shape, which can make it difficult to find bras, bathing suits, and other clothing that fits comfortably. With breast lift surgery, we can reshape the breasts and make it easier for you to find clothes that fit well. If the loss of breast tissue and volume is also a problem, we can augment the breasts with breast implants.
For many women, the breasts and nipples sag at different rates, resulting in an asymmetrical appearance. During breast lift surgery, we will remove precise amounts of excess skin, lift the breasts, and adjust the nipple-areola complex to produce a more symmetrical, balanced look.

Breast Lift Techniques Which Option Is Best for You?
The donut lift is typically best for patients with smaller breasts and mild sagging. As the name suggests, our plastic surgeon will make a donut-shaped incision around the areola. There is minimal visual scarring because the incision is concealed around the areola.
The lollipop lift is best for women with mild-to-moderate sagging who also want to reshape their breast tissue. Our plastic surgeon will create the donut incision plus a vertical incision along the underside of your breast.
The anchor lift is the most complex breast lift incision type and is typically used for women with large breasts or severe sagging. Our plastic surgeon will make the lollipop incisions and an additional incision along the breast crease.
Crescent Lift A Technique for Mild Sagging
A crescent lift is a small incision made along the top of the areola. We may recommend a crescent lift for women with minor sagging who only slightly need their nipples raised.

Combining Cosmetic Surgery Procedures to Produce the Best Results
Many women have lost breast tissue due to pregnancy or the aging process. Others may simply wish to increase the size of the breasts for a more filled-out silhouette. During the breast augmentation procedure, we can place breast implants to add fullness and volume to the breasts, particularly in the upper area. By combining the lift procedure with a breast augmentation, we can fill out and reshape the breasts during one surgical appointment.
There are some cases in which women have overly large breasts that have begun to sag due to age or weight gain. It may be more appropriate to perform a breast reduction procedure for these patients. This procedure utilizes the same incisions as a breast lift but involves the removal of tissue and excess skin. If you wish to reduce the size of your breasts, we invite you to contact our Carmel, IN, practice to learn more about breast reduction.
Recovery and Side Effects Following a Mastopexy
Following breast lift surgery at our Indianapolis practice, patients can expect to:
- Experience swelling and discomfort at the incision sites
- Control discomfort with medication
- Wear a support bra
- Take five to 10 days off work, as long as there is no heavy lifting
As you heal, swelling will decrease, and incision lines will fade. Drs. Grasee and Bergman will give you aftercare instructions following your breast lift. Contact our Indianapolis-area practice if you experience any adverse side effects.
The results of your breast lift will be evident as soon as you complete surgery. However, swelling and bruising can alter their initial appearance. Your results should become more refined over time as you recover.
While the results of breast lift surgery are permanent, your breasts will continue to change overtime. Aging, weight gain, and gravity can all continue to take their toll. The best way to prolong your breast lift is by maintaining your weight and a healthy lifestyle.
