Breast Reconstruction: A Vital Part of the Healing Process By Carmel Cosmetic and Plastic Surgeons on October 18, 2019

The choice to undergo breast reconstruction is a very personal decision.  Before making the decision of whether to have breast reconstruction, you should be aware of the many benefits to breast reconstruction.  Studies have shown that reconstruction after cancer surgery can lead to marked gains in your quality of life, with benefits to sexuality, body image, and overall well-being by restoring the appearance of your breasts. However, breast reconstruction can be complex and may involve several staged procedures before the reconstruction is complete.  Each patient and her circumstances are unique. That is why it is crutial for your breast surgeon and plastic surgeon, along with you, to discuss what the right option is for you.

Some women may think of breast reconstruction following therapeutic mastectomy (removal of the breast for breast cancer) as a cosmetic procedure—one they don’t really need for their health. The truth is that breast reconstruction surgery isn’t only an option for breast cancer patients having a mastectomy, but it is a mandated right by law. If you are having a mastectomy that is covered as part of your breast cancer treatment, your insurance must also cover breast reconstruction surgery under the Women’s Health and Cancer Rights Act of 1998.

Women from all walks of life come to Dr Grasee and Dr Bergman for breast reconstruction. There is no "one size fits all" approach to breast reconstruction.  No two women have exactly the same expectations for their breast reconstruction surgeries. What can be said is that for many women, breast reconstruction is a vital part of the healing process after breast cancer surgery.

Whether you decide to have breast reconstruction will depend on your medical condition, general health, lifestyle, emotional state and breast size and shape. At Carmel Cosmetic & Plastic Surgeons, you will consult with your surgeon to discuss your personal goals for breast reconstruction. For many women, the support and perspective of family, friends, breast implant support groups, and breast cancer support groups will also help you make the right decision.
