It can feel a bit overwhelming when you begin your search for a qualified plastic surgeon who you can trust to perform your procedure of choice.

Many of us may start with our "go to" method of finding answers these days.....the internet. However, you should be aware that undertaking a Google search of suggested terms like "top plastic surgeons near me" or "best plastic surgeon" can yield many results.  The real problem that remains is how are you to choose from the many surgeons listed in your search results?

Having a checklist with a solid set of criteria can be a good way to start your search for your plastic surgeon.

Look for plastic surgeons with board certification by accredited governing bodies. You will most definitely want a surgeon who is board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery which is the only plastic surgery board recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties.

Although wading through the waters of various reviews and reviewers can be treacherous, credible plastic surgeons will have consistently high ratings and good testamonials from their previous patients.  Hearing about the experiences of former patients can give you a deeper understanding of what others liked or disliked about their approach and patient care.

Your plastic surgeon should offer a consultation that is comprehensive in nature. The consult should factor in your aesthetic goals, unique anatomy, medical history and lifestyle. You will want a surgeon who takes the time to truly understand your treatment needs and who can speak honestly about realistic expectations and can help you anticipate the recovery experience.  Once you meet and discuss your goals with your surgeon, your plastic surgeon should develop a tailored treatment plan for you. Remember, it is not always necessary to connect with your plastic surgeon on a personal level, but it can make the entire experience a bit more comfortable.

Plastic surgeons should have relevant experience and be able to show you actual, real-life results. Ask your surgeon to see before and after photos of their work.

A good plastic surgeon will also meet stringent and rigorous patient safety standards. Membership in professional organizations like the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) indicates the surgeon has maintained a proper and high level of medical education, including in patient safety.  Additionally, surgeons who perform plastic surgery in accredited or state-licensed facilities ensure they meet the highest standards of patient safety.
