Fat Injection Overview
At Carmel Cosmetic & Plastic Surgeons, we will help you make an informed decision about utilizing fat injections to create a more aesthetic appearance. Like other dermal fillers, fat injections help reduce or eliminate wrinkles. The benefits of fat injections can be discussed at the time of your consultation at our Carmel practice located north of Indianapolis.
How long you will see the aesthetic effects of fat injection varies. The fat is slowly absorbed into the body, although the amount of absorption is variable, and frequently hard to predict. Typically, more than half of the fat used in injectable treatments is absorbed within six months of the procedure. Almost all patients will permanently retain some of the injected fat. However, this percentage varies from patient to patient.
What Is a Fat Injection Procedure?
A fat injection in Indianapolis is typically performed at our accredited outpatient surgery center and is a two-step process. The fat must be harvested from somewhere on your own body -- typically from the abdomen or hips. After it is extracted, it is placed in a centrifuge to separate the fat from surrounding tissues. The fat is then packed into a syringe to deliver the fat to the targeted area. Because fat is a bit larger than other injectable materials, it is almost always injected more deeply into the skin. The injected fat plumps and tightens the skin, thereby decreasing (and in some cases eliminating) wrinkles, scars and lines from redundant or sagging skin.
