Types of Liposuction By Carmel Cosmetic and Plastic Surgeons on November 02, 2011

There are many different ways that we can approach body sculpting. Sometimes only minor surgeries are needed to help improve the overall contour of someone’s figure. In other cases, more substantial body contouring will be required to achieve a patient’s aesthetic goals. We will be sure to fully assess your situation at our Indianapolis area plastic surgery center. Rest assured that we will always help you make a decision that is in your best interests.

About Liposuction

Whether you require minor body contouring or more substantial body contouring, liposuction will likely be involved. Liposuction is a cosmetic surgery procedure that removes of problematic pockets of fat from the body. These are the sorts of fat deposits that do not respond to regular exercise and a sensible diet.

There are different ways that liposuction can be performed, and we’d like to briefly go over some of these methods right now.

Traditional Liposuction

It may be best to discuss how liposuction was traditionally performed. During liposuction, the surgeon uses a special instrument called a cannula. This is basically a hollow needle inserted into the treatment area. The fat in the body is safely extracted through safe and controlled suction. Note that liposuction is never intended for weight loss purposes since only a certain amount of body fat can be safely extracted at one time.

Tumescent Liposuction

Though traditional liposuction is effective, tumescent liposuction is actually more effective and provides a better surgical experience for the patient. During tumescent liposuction, the treatment area is first injected with a special surgical solution. This solution consists of local anesthetic to reduce discomfort as well as epinephrine, which shrinks the blood vessels in the region. The fat in the injection area will swell and firm up, making it easier for the surgeon to extract the fat with the cannula.

Ultrasound Assisted Liposuction (UAL)

Ultrasonic assisted liposuction is yet another improvement on liposuction techniques. It’s essentially tumescent liposuction performed with a special cannula that transmits ultrasonic waves. These waves of ultrasonic sound help liquefy the fat deposits in the treatment area, making the fat easier to extract.

Liposuction for Different Parts of the Body

Everyone knows that liposuction is often performed on the abdominal area, both alone or in combination with tummy tuck (abdominoplasty). Yet liposuction can actually be performed on all regions of the body as needed in order to achieve a total body lift. If you have contouring issues with the buttocks, the hips, the thighs, the chest, the upper arms, the neckline, or even certain parts of the face, liposuction may be right for you.
