The Differences Between BOTOX® and Dermal Fillers By Carmel Cosmetic and Plastic Surgeons on April 01, 2011

Many people are interested in the getting the benefits of plastic surgery without having to undergo invasive surgical procedures. One such option that can provide these sorts of results is cosmetic injections. Cosmetic injections consist of medical products that can help reduce wrinkles, add volume to certain parts of the face, and enhance your overall appearance. Our Indianapolis plastic surgeons and our staff here would like to take some time here to discuss the important distinctions between popular cosmetic injections: BOTOX® cosmetic and dermal fillers.

It may be best to start first with describing dermal fillers. Dermal fillers are injectables such as Restylane®, Perlane®, Radiesse®, and Juvéderm®. Dermal fillers are used to help provide volume to hollowed out parts of the face usually in nasolabial folds, at the corners of the mouth, or in and around the lips.  This reduces wrinkles and adds fullness. In general, dermal filler treatments can last up to six months to a year, at which point an additional treatment can be performed to achieve similar results.

By contrast, BOTOX® injections are not intended to add volume. Rather, Indianapolis BOTOX® injections will help reduce the appearance of wrinkles and lines in another way. BOTOX® injections paralyze muscle contractions at the injection site. By halting muscle contractions, wrinkles are less likely to form, making the face appear more vibrant and youthful. BOTOX® injections will last a few months (usually between three to five months) and treatment can be performed again to achieve similar results.

The cosmetic injectable treatment that is right for you will be determined by your needs. In some cases, dermal fillers will be a better option. For instance, to deal with the hollows in the nasolabial folds, you’ll want to consider dermal fillers. For furrows on the brow and crow’s feet, BOTOX® injections may be more appropriate. When you come to our practice for a consultation, Dr Grasee or Dr Bergman will be able to determine which injectable treatment is best suited to meet your needs.
